If the US has the World War II Memorial in the middle of Washington DC, the Philippines has a whole island to honor the courage, valor, and heroism of both Filipino and American soldiers during World War II.
The island is called Corregidor. To know more about its history, click here. Also known as "the Rock," it is divided into sectors: topside, bottomside and tail end.
At topside, you can find Mile-long Barracks, Cine Corregidor, and quarters of bachelor and senior offices. You can also find the Parade Ground, the reconstructed Spanish Lighthouse, the Pacific War Memorial Dome, sculpture of Eternal flame of Freedom, and the Pacific War Memorial museum here.
At bottomside, you can find the Corregidor Hotel, Gen. MacArthur Park, and the Malita Tunnel. You can see the North and South dock, and the Lorcha dock from the Corregidor Hotel. A Light and Sound Show called the "Malinta Experience" reenacting World War II events is an optional tour on the part of guests for which P150 will have to be paid.
The tail end was the only part of Corregidor, which was not given a name by the Americans. The following landmarks can be found at Tail End: Statue fo the Filipino Woman, Filipino Heroes Memorial, Japanese Garden of Peace, and Jibo Kannon Stone Buddha.
Convenient, educational, and scenic are the words to describe a day tour in Corregidor. Sun Cruises, is the only tour company, that provides ferry services to the island. The ferry departs from Manila Bay (old Hoverferry terminal near CCP along Roxas Boulevard) daily at 8:00am and back in Manila by 4pm. During the airconditioned ferry ride, there will be a short video presentation and a talk about Corregidor. Passengers are then picked up at the North dock by tour buses for a guided and narrated tour on the island. A complimentary lunch buffet is included in the P1999 package. It is best to buy your tickets at least a day before your intended tour, as you might not get a seat. Click here to purchase your ticket.

WW2 is such a facinating topic. From the evilman who started it to the heroes who protected the world. I hope none of it is ever forgotten
ReplyDeleteYes, WW2 truly holds a unique place in the subconscious of those who were directly affected by it. Hopefully, even those not directly affected also learn its lesson. Thanks!
